A Public Alert System on local conditions of the West Nile Virus has been established by the Fulton County West Nile Virus ASAP Committee.
Public statements, media releases and website postings will indicate either a low, medium, or high risk level with the corresponding"traffic light symbol" to indicate specific preven tion and protection measures.
A LOW RISK usually occurs from spring to early summer when no birds,
animals, or human cases of West Nile have been reported. Residents are encouraged to remove standing water and report potential mosquito breeding
grounds to authorities. Residents are encouraged to use personal protection measures such as insect repellents.

A MEDIUM RISK occurs generally from early to mid summer when
there is above average rainfall and temperatures, when 5% to 15% of birds test positive and when there are suspected human and horse cases. The public is encouraged to reduce exposure between dusk and dawn.
Repellants containing DEET are recommended.
A HIGH RISK occurs mid to later summer when above average rainfall and temperatures occur, and when human and horse cases of We st Nile are confirmed. The
health care community is put on high alert. Persons are encouraged to remove standing water, to remain indoors between dusk and dawn and use
insect repellents containing DEET when outside. Community spraying may also be considered.
